Blue Crazy Nine Patch

This was my last quilt of 2010. I finished it on New Year's Eve. I made two sets of crazy nine patch blocks in January of 2010 and have only finished one quilt so far. This one is a surprise birthday present for my aunt.

This is one of my favorite quilt backs so far because of how nice the quilting looks.

Finished size: 39" x 54"

  1. i love your quilt. i have completed my first crazy nine patch and can't decide how to quilt the blocks - but i think i may take inspiration from yours as the back is lovely too! by the way - does your quilt have separte binding? it looks like a good idea to use the back to edge the quilt and i havent seen that before - are there any particular pitfalls with that method?

  2. Thanks, I do love the back on this one. It does not have binding. I use the back to create the binding on the front. The main thing you have to keep in mind when doing this is that you don't want to quilt to the edge of the quilt and stop as I learned on this quilt http://crafterwithoutacat.blogspot.com/2009/04/lilys-quilt.html because then you will end up with backstitching showing on the back. I am very fond of designs like this one http://crafterwithoutacat.blogspot.com/2011/03/shark-quilt.html where you reach the edge of the quilt and then turn, but any pattern that creates a closed loop tends to look better than a dead end.
Mitering the corners can be difficult if you have too much fabric at the corner, so I often end up gradually cutting some away until it folds smoothly.
This method does have design limitations, but overall, it saves me time.
