Postage Stamp Bird Ornaments

I made these birds for me and Amanda back in March, when I was on a bird ornament kick after finding this tutorial. I used some postage stamp fabric to make them postage themed.

Bird Pin Cushion

I made a little bird pin cushion for my mom to go with this new bird sewing box I found for her at Joann's. The bird is weighted with a magnet. Now that I'm able to go home more frequently, I've been slowly upgrading my my mom and sister's sewing supplies so I am more likely to have what I need on hand when projects come up while I'm visiting. The box my mom uses for sewing supplies had a lid that doubled as a pin cushion, but the lid was no longer attached.

Bird Ornaments

I made bird ornaments for Claire and Lucy with fabric matching the quilts I made for them.

Rainbow Bird

I was looking for a bird-shaped pin cushion pattern when I found this tutorial. There were also instructions for turning it into an ornament, so of course that's what I did. This one is for a coworker's birthday, but I plan to make several more for Christmas!

Bright Birds Quilt

I have had this bird fabric forever, and the green and pink dots possibly even longer. The green dots date back to at least the dinosaur quilt from 2010. At one point, I had this print in purple too, but not in the quantity I had pink and green, nor was it a bright enough purple to match this quilt. Purple is a tricky color to match, so I was relieved to finally find this purple fabric last year.

The back is perfectly pieced from the leftover fabric!

A Little Bird Doll Quilt

I bought a fat quarter of this bird fabric with no plan, just because it was cute. After talking to my sister, I knew it would be perfect for a doll quilt for one of Claire's friends.

Bird Pillow Covers

Amanda asked me to make her a pillow cover. I was going to make it to match her quilt, but I wasn't thrilled with my options. When asked for inspiration, she suggested a bird silhouette. This worked out nicely to coordinate thematically, even if I didn't use matching fabric. I like this color combination as well.
 

I'm not the best at applique, so it's a very basic bird. The applique itself turned out much better than expected. There is only a slight wrinkle near the tail. I used my zipper foot rather than do a blanket stitch because the bird was so curvy. Unfortunately it's not exactly centered. I centered the entire design when it would have looked better to center the body of the bird.

I wasn't sure applique would be comfy on your face, so I decided to make a flannel one with scraps I had left from the flannel bird blanket.

They both have unexciting envelope backs.

Flannel Bird Blanket

After finishing Amanda's birthday quilt, I had 2.5 yards of bird flannel left. I went and got 2.5 yards of this green flannel so I could make another completely flannel blanket. These are 8" squares without quilt batting in between. I left a half inch seam allowance, snipped a quarter inch to fray.

Birthday Birds Quilt

In early September, I finished and wrapped all of Amanda's Christmas ornaments for this year's Ornament Exchange. It then occurred to me that I didn't have any presents planned for her birthday, which at that point was only about six weeks away. It's her 30th, so I needed to do something extra special. Hence, this quilt.

I've had this bird fabric since at least 2011, when it appeared on the blog for the first time, so it's possible I've had it even longer. Even before I'd realized Amanda's birthday was imminent, I'd been planning to use it to make her a quilt, I just hadn't settled on a design. So I finally got my act together and here we are!

Amanda really likes flannel, which I also used in her wedding quilt, so I seized the opportunity to buy this matching bird flannel, which I've also had for years. However, I either just bought whatever was left on the bolt, or I guess I must have been planning a gigantic quilt, because even after backing the quilt, I had 2.5 yards left. I don't really make full-sized quilts any more, so I'm not sure what I was thinking.

Blue Bird Quilt

My friend is expecting a baby girl in September, but he said they were trying to stay away from pink. It's a good thing I asked because, otherwise, there would definitely have been pink in a baby girl quilt.

Birds for the Kitchen

After I made my mom two bird pot holders back in May, I told her I'd make her another square one since she liked that one better so she'd have a set. I meant to have it ready when I saw her in July...then in September...but I just didn't sew much this summer.

I decided to use a different, brighter color scheme for this one, so hopefully she doesn't mind that they are not a matching pair.

I really love this brown fabric. It doesn't match the birds at all, but the binding ties them together nicely. For some reason the binding looks so much brighter on the back, even though I took the pictures in the exact same spot right after each other.

In my effort to use up craft supplies that have just been sitting around, I busted out my rusty crochet skills and also made this dish cloth since I thought I recalled that she liked ones like this. The colors are somewhat complimentary to the birds.

Bird Pot Holders

When I made pot holders for Julie, I decided to use up the batting to make some for my mom too. I used the same fabrics that I used for her mug rug.

Bird Mug Rug

This mug rug is for my mom. I really love this design, which is fairly reversible. It incorporates three of the fabrics I used in the blue crazy nine patch quilt.

I actually did this side second and it became the front since I liked it more:

I think a border of dark blue around the bird print would have looked nice, but I didn't want it to get any larger.
