Doll Quilt

After I finished the cherry quilt, it occurred to me that I should make a doll quilt for my cousin's daughter, since her brother was getting a quilt. I had 8 days before leaving for Thanksgiving. The most time consuming part was selecting fabric, but I met the deadline! I previously used this fabric to make purses.

Unicorn Doll Quilts

I was looking for something else when I came across Elizabeth Hartman's Lisa the Unicorn pattern, but once I saw it, I knew it would have to take precedence over my 2019 quilt goals because of course it was perfect for my nieces. My sister emphasized the doll size quilt because they do not need any more stuff. Using 2.5" strips, the pattern resulted in blocks way larger than that, so I scaled it back to 1.25" strips.

Claire initially wanted pink, purple, and teal, then changed her mind to rainbow, though I still emphasized pink/purple in my rainbow layout. I had to make two anyway, so I made one of both. The only thing I had to buy was a fat quarter of teal fabric because my stash is lacking in teal. I probably would've made the background blue for both if I'd had enough fabric, but I was otherwise using what I had on hand.

You can see they did not turn out exactly the same. Clearly something went wrong in my adapted measurements, and the ear strips differ, as do the horns. I had the perfect unicorn fabric for the back, and used my trusty silver dots to bind them.

Hexagons

I made this for Amanda for with the hexagon blocks her grandma gave me a couple years ago. Since the blocks were all hand-stitched, I hand-stitched most of it as well. (It looks fine on the front, but not so much on the back.) I attached the binding to the front by machine, and attached it to the back by hand. It's too big to be an ornament, but I'm sending it to her along with my submissions for our Christmas ornament exchange.

Pink Doll Quilt

I knew when I made the owl doll quilt that Claire did not have enough quilts for all of her dolls. However, this did not occur to her until she received the owl quilt. I decided to use the same fabric I used for the doll clothes I made for her for the this doll quilt. Then I gave her a choice between two sets of pink and green fabrics and she chose this swirly pink fabric over pink polka dots. I think it was a good choice! Unfortunately, I did not have enough of any of the three main fabrics for the back. Instead of plain solid pink, I opted for this chevron print, since it mimics the design on the front of the quilt.

Sleepy Owl Doll Quilt

Claire got bunk beds for her dolls, so she needed a new doll quilt and a few pillows. I had a fat quarter of this owl fabric. There were other cute owls, but these were perfect since they look like they're sleeping. She wanted it to be pink of course, so it was an ideal project for this batik I've had forever and have been looking for ways to use. Julie reported that when Claire opened the quilt she said, "It has owls on it! This is amazing!"

The pillow forms are 5"x7". I stuffed them with leftover polyester quilt batting. I hate stuffing things, so they are a little lumpy, but it was a great way to use up batting! There are three because it's a triple-decker bunk bed. I love the little pillow cases!

Mini Quilt Ornament

A couple years ago I had the idea to make Amanda a mini-quilt ornament. I am glad I waited for inspiration because it is much better as a Lisa Frank mini-quilt ornament than anything I would have previously made! Each image is 1" square. I used Jolee's Easy Image transfer sheets. They were different than the printable, fusible fabric sheets I used for the fabric photo book I made last year. (Coincidentally, I used the same pink fabric for both projects!) Those were fabric-y -- you printed and ironed -- where these you print, iron, and peel off the backing for a transfer. These worked much better for this project.

Mini Quilt Ornament

This is my second mini quilt ornament, but the first is actually for Christmas so it will be posted later. After I made the first one, I realized I needed to make a Doctor Who themed one for a friend who just happened to have an October birthday, so why wait until Christmas?

If you are not a Doctor Who fan, the images include a TARDIS, a Dalek, a Cyberman, K-9, and a Weeping Angel.

A Little Bird Doll Quilt

I bought a fat quarter of this bird fabric with no plan, just because it was cute. After talking to my sister, I knew it would be perfect for a doll quilt for one of Claire's friends.

Finished size: 17.5" x 21"

I had to go back for another fat quarter so I could make a matching bag:

Unicorn Doll Quilt

I couldn't resist buying this unicorn fabric, but then, since I didn't have a project in mind, it just sat there. I finally decided to make a little doll quilt for my niece. She's just starting playing with dolls, and it is perfect for the wooden baby doll cradle my dad made when I was little.

I also made a matching cushion for the cradle:

O Selvedge Tree

A beautiful 60 degree day in March, and what am I doing? Making Christmas decorations naturally.

I'd been saving selvedge for a while and I decided I needed to do something with it. I didn't have all that much, so I vaguely thought I would just make a little pin cushion. Not all the dots were the same length though, so I decided to stack them by length. Once I realized I could make a tree, I was sold. It shifted a bit during sewing, so it's a bit of a wonky tree.

The star at the top was leftover from the 3D ribbon trees. It was not originally a button, so it had to be turned in to one with the assistance of my handy rotary tool.

If you hold it up to the light, it looks like it's snowing!

A Solo Doll Quilt

This is the last one. Now I've made one for every little girl I know. It has been a really good stash busting project for both fabric and leftover scraps of quilt batting. This doll quilt is going to the little girl who is Samantha's new owner. I figured she might need a new blanket.

I didn't have enough blue fabric left for the bag. It is lined with pink.

Almost Twin Doll Quilts

After the first round of twin doll quilts, I decided to make some more, though these are not identical like the first two. That's okay because these are not going to twins. I had intended them to be identical, but I didn't have enough of either the cherry or the green fabric.

I did have just enough fabric left to make two little bags:

Twin Doll Quilts

Surprise! It's twin quilts for my twin nieces. I have some dolls to send them, so it was a good excuse to make some doll quilts. I wanted to use this floral fabric, but it wasn't really enough for a bigger quilt. I also wanted to try out this pattern, but I didn't really want to piece it on a larger scale. I used a fusible interfacing technique to quickly piece the tops.

I really like the quilting pattern, but I don't think it complements the top design very well. It probably would have looked better with a design that matches the way the pattern radiates from the center. It would definitely work better on a pattern where there are an even number of squares in the rows and columns.

ETA: After I made the cherry doll quilts, I had to go back and make matching bags for these quilts as well:

Kaleidoscope Rainbow Stripes

I used this stripey rainbow fabric in quilt block #9 of the Quilt Block Project. I made these four blocks awhile ago and I finally decided to turn them into a finished project, however small. The blocks create a really nice design, though the project is only doll blanket sized.

Dresden Plate Rainbow

I'd wanted to make a Dresden plate block for awhile, and I finally got around to it. I don't have the special ruler to make the pieces, so I just cut them all individually. Since I wanted to use 8 colors and have 16 spokes, the math worked out nicely. They actually came together more quickly than I expected. When I pieced them together, however, they unfortunately did not lay flat in the center and I ended up with a bit of a Dresden cone, but I was able to rectify it. I planned to stitch it in place using the clear nylon thread I'd used for the dragonfly quilt, but it was giving me fits, so I wound 8 different colored bobbins and sewed each spoke individually.

Mini Rainbow

It's so cute and tiny! These are scraps from my radial rainbow mini quilt. I was going to use them for the back of the quilt, but when I came up with a better idea, I still wanted to use them.

Radial Rainbow Mini Quilt

I got the image for this quilt in my head while working on rainbow mini quilts #1 and #2.

I am amazed at how well it turned out. I was very afraid the intersections wouldn't line up at all. It turned out exactly like I imagined it:

It wasn't until after I had finished it that it occurred to me to add some color to the corners, but by then I was nearly out of these scraps anyway. I considered cutting it into an octagon instead of a square but decided not to.

I finished the front but then could not decide what to do on the back that would be suitably match the front. Three weeks later, the solution popped into my head:

I would have liked a nice scrappy and colorful border, but I used up the very last of the purple on the back. The purple square is actually pieced from a longer, narrower scrap. That's the risk of working with scraps.

It was so pretty I just had to take some in progress pictures:

Shamrock Rainbow Mini Quilt

This was the first of two scrap fabric rainbow projects I started over Easter weekend. I couldn't decide how to quilt this one, so the second project got finished first. A couple weeks ago I had run across this shamrock fabric remnant while organizing my fabric scraps. It was originally used for a St. Patrick's Day ornament for my grandma, and it lends itself well to rainbows. The back is just plain green and it's only quilted along the top and bottom of the rainbow strip.

Rainbow Mini Quilt

This is actually the second scrap fabric rainbow project I started over Easter weekend.

I kind of like the back more. It's not as busy.

Hexagon Mug Rug

This mug rug is for my aunt, the same one who just received a birthday quilt. I actually used left over blue fabric from her quilt. She sent a picture of a navy mug with white lettering, saying "Pistons." Since I didn't want to do a basketball theme, I needed fabric that would work well with blue and white. The striped fabric was also used in quilt block #10.
