Purple and Yellow Progress Update

I posted about this quilt in March, after finishing the top, and then it sat draped over the office chair in the sewing room until the beginning of July. I had three blocks - two 14" blocks and one 7" block - to finish in order to complete what was going to become either a second quilt top or the back of the quilt. Here are the 14" blocks:

I already had the purple pinwheel parts, which measured 8.5", done - all I had to do was add the yellow - so you wouldn't think I would have put it off so long, but I didn't know what I wanted to do, and was rather overwhelmed by all the tiny piecing. I ended up making ten 4.5" blocks with purple centers, which made it seem more manageable.

Hopefully I'll have a finished product soon!

Purple and Yellow Progress

I didn't quilt much last year, and I decided that I would change that in 2013. I started by pulling out the blocks from my Quilt Block Project. However, when I laid it out, I still wasn't entirely happy with the combination of blocks. I decided to pull out my two favorites, the purple and yellow pinwheel block (shown below) and the pink and blue block and make them their own quilts. It turned out that I had enough scraps to make a second purple and yellow pinwheel block, only slightly smaller.

I had three other purple and yellow blocks to work with:

Quilt Block #30

Quilt Block #34

Quilt Block #7

After some seam ripping and some additional fabric, they turned into this:

This was going to be the back of the quilt, and the pinwheel blocks would go on the front. At one point, I had purchased at least a yard each of four yellow fabrics for another project, so I was determined not to buy any more fabric except some solid purple for the binding. But the back didn't fit with the design I'd put together for the quilt top. Then one day I realized that if I took apart that center hexagon block, I could make more pinwheel blocks. After more seam ripping, I realized I didn't have enough of the yellow or purple polka dot fabrics to make the same pinwheel blocks. However, I was still able to recycle the pieces into something more useful:

A few more blocks, and I'll be able to piece what will either become the new back or a second top.

Quilt Block #35

This is definitely my most favorite block of all! The color combination just makes me happy. Plus, it was a total improv block, and it turned out really well! It started out with the floral fabric triangle scraps. Originally it was going to just be the purple blocks with the triangles in the corners, but that was boring, so I added the polka dot strips through the middle of each. That step made the blocks too small, so I added the border. I really wish I had more of this floral fabric!

Mini Irish Chain

I had cut 1.5" squares out of the scraps of this floral fabric quite a while ago, and last night I finally decided to do something with them. I was originally planning on pairing them with a combination of purple and yellow squares. Then I decided on an Irish chain design and had to go with yellow because I didn't have enough purple. This is a more subtle yellow fabric leftover from my star quilt, not the original yellow fabric paired with the flowers.

I think the front would have looked nice if the binding had been the floral fabric, but I didn't have enough left for that, and I like the yellow on the back. While this project didn't involve a whole lot of planning, the back is particularly improvised.

Finished size: 10" square

Quilt Block #7

This block was an experiment with triangles. I'm not entirely sure what I had in mind, if anything. I used my favorite fabric, and the yellow fabric in combination with the design reminds me of a piece of fruit.

Teapots

I saw this teapot pattern at Pink Penguin and I just had to make one! This time I was smart and sent the link to my mom to see if she wanted one too, because I knew she would of course. I didn't bother with the paper piecing as the tutorial shows though because that just seemed like a lot of work, so I just figured out what scale I wanted (finished project 7x9") and cut the fabric as I went. Since they are small, I actually hand-stitched the binding, something I am not usually patient enough to do. I made use of the last of this fabulous flowered fabric that has been featured in other projects. Now I have only a few scraps left, so we'll see where they turn up!

Pin Cushion

Yet another project using the leftover baby quilt fabric. Since it's floral, I thought it worked well for flower petals. This flower is hot-glued into a tiny 1.5" ceramic pot. Unfortunately, attempts to take photographs of a side view did not turn out so well. I made this mostly because it was cute, but after completing it, I do not how I went so long without a pin cushion. It makes life a lot easier.

Baby Quilt Fabric

I made this ornament out of the leftover fabric I used for a quilt I made for the baby of one of my friends. Unfortunately, in my excitement to mail the quilt, I forgot to take a picture of it, but at least you can see the lovely fabric here.

Try it yourself with this tutorial.
