Woven Hexie Stamp Ornament

I followed a tutorial for weaving this ornament. I was able to do it without the special weaving tool, though I'm sure that would have been easier than using tweezers. I also used masking tape to hold it in place instead of pins. This is a scaled back version of the ornament in the tutorial. When I drew out the grid, I realized it would be a rather large ornament, so I made the strips 1" wide instead. It's still 5" across and 6" tall. I machine stitched the binding to the front and then hand stitched it to the back. The binding was probably trickier than the weaving, even without the special tool. It's a very reversible ornament. I used a button to attach the ribbon instead of a grommet. This postage stamp fabric was last seen in a hexagon shaped ornament in 2018.

Hexagons

I made this for Amanda for with the hexagon blocks her grandma gave me a couple years ago. Since the blocks were all hand-stitched, I hand-stitched most of it as well. (It looks fine on the front, but not so much on the back.) I attached the binding to the front by machine, and attached it to the back by hand. It's too big to be an ornament, but I'm sending it to her along with my submissions for our Christmas ornament exchange.

Hexagon Blocks

In September, Amanda went to visit her Grandma. While there, she sent me a photo of these hexagon quilt blocks, which were made by Amanda's grandma's mother-in-law, and said she was giving them to me. I was astonished to receive such an amazing gift! They are all hand-stitched. Amanda gave them to me when I saw her earlier this month, and we looked through all of them. Of course the first thing I did when I got home was sort them all. A lot of research and deliberation will be required before I commit to a project!

There are 50 total blocks, with only a few duplicates. The 43 unique blocks are pictured below:

Brown Hexagon Quilt

This was the original fabric pull for this quilt, before I even had a design picked out:

All the fabrics in the center were fat quarters. The first five came together; the bright green was an add-on. I was debating between the green and the brown to complement them. It's a bit small, but that's because there wasn't much fabric to start with since so much was fat quarters. I wasn't even sure I'd have enough brown to back and bind it. Fortunately, I had small pieces of two other complementary fabrics to supplement the design. I could have added on a row at the bottom instead of the two half columns on the side, but that would have made it really narrow.

Since I normally work on square graph paper, designing a hexagon quilt was rather tricky. I ended up printing out triangle grids to design on. I don't know that I'll plan another quilt with hexagons or equilateral triangles anytime soon. Cutting 60 degree angles with just a rectangular ruler was not particularly fun, and I'm pleased that it came together so nicely. My other hexagon projects have been smaller in scale.

Rainbow Hexagons

About a year ago, the clock on the wall in my office at work died a slow, painful death. As it stopped keeping time accurately, it made weird noises. When we reported it to facilities maintenance, they didn't fix it, they just removed the entire clock, leaving a gaping hole in the wall. From where I sit, I can't see most of the hole, but one of my coworkers looks right at it. He has commented that I should make something crafty to cover the hole, but it wasn't until this month that I realized I could use an embroidery hoop to make a convenient circle. I got an 18" hoop at Hobby Lobby and painted it silver. All the fabric is from my stash. The hexagons are pieced together, and then I stitched the whole loop down on the black background. I managed to get the whole thing in the hoop without too much trouble.

Hexagon Mug Rug

This mug rug is for my aunt, the same one who just received a birthday quilt. I actually used left over blue fabric from her quilt. She sent a picture of a navy mug with white lettering, saying "Pistons." Since I didn't want to do a basketball theme, I needed fabric that would work well with blue and white. The striped fabric was also used in quilt block #10.

Hexagon Turtle

I saw this turtle on One Pretty Thing. There was a tutorial on Craft Passion. It was just so cute, I decided to attempt the hexagons. I had never attempted hexagons and really had no desire to until I saw this little project. They came out fairly well, but I don't think I'll be attempting another hexagon project. The shell is about 3"x4". Head to tail and flipper to flipper are both about 6".
